James Biss

James Biss's passion for Gems and Fair Trade has spanned decades and began in his youth with travels all around the globe. Four years ago he founded the GEMFUND Organization, a Social Enterprise based in Nairobi for Women's Artisanal Mining projects - and has had some terrific experiences and success in East Africa.

James Biss's passion for Gems and Fair Trade has spanned decades and began in his youth with travels all around the globe. Four years ago he founded the GEMFUND Organization, a Social Enterprise based in Nairobi for Women's Artisanal Mining projects - and has had some terrific experiences and success in East Africa.
James has a degree in International Relations, a Graduate Gemologist in Residence Certificate from the GIA, and a Rotman MBA. He has worked and served in several capacities, including as Director (later COO and Managing Director) of Canadian Jewellers Association (CJA) - during which time he co-authored the Canadian Gemstone Guidelines which became the standard for ethical sales of gems in the country, Exec Director of Jewellers Vigilance Canada (JVC), Founding Member of the GIA Alumni Association, and Member of the Exclusive DeBeers Carat Club.
